Chair: Stephanie Malone, PhD, Principal Scientist, Roche Sequencing Solutions
Councilor for the CalACS section
Location: San Francisco Bay Area, over 3,200 members
The CalACS LSYCC has been revamped since Chair Stephanie Malone came on board. She has engaged younger chemists to volunteer and helped connect to neighboring LSYCC section Silicon Valley (previously known as Santa Clara) for event collaborations. Similar to their ACS local section, this YCC section is focused on programming to form a strong network within the young professionals community, and programming that supports the individual needs of undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral scholars. In fact, they work closely with student clubs such as the UC Berkeley ACS and AiCHE, to create valuable programs for students in all chemistry disciplines.
With members living in San Francisco all the way up to the northern edge of California and east towards Sacramento, there is a wide breadth of chemists, many working in biotechnology, national labs (Livermore & Berkeley) and academia. The YCC section has developed innovative events to incorporate younger chemists’ interests such as a Home Brew Competition (collaborating with Silicon Valley), a Chemistry Podcast (in the works), and “speed networking” for those interested in career development.
